Ray Stevenson

With great sadness, we report the passing of Ray Stevenson, a talented and versatile actor who brought many memorable characters to life on screen. Stevenson died on Sunday, May 22, 2023, at 58, after being hospitalized with a sudden illness while filming in Italy.

Stevenson was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, in 1964. He moved to England with his family when he was eight and developed a passion for acting. He attended the Bristol Old Vic theatre school and started his career in British television, appearing in shows such as The Return of the Native, The Bill and Holby City.

He debuted 1998 in The Theory of Flight, opposite Helena Bonham Carter and Kenneth Branagh. He played roles in films such as King Arthur, Outpost, Punisher: War Zone and The Book of Eli. He also starred in franchises like Divergent, GI Joe, and Transporter.

He was widely known for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he played Volstagg, one of the Warriors Three and a loyal friend of Thor. He appeared in Thor (2011), Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Thor: Ragnarok (2017), where his character met a tragic end at the hands of Hela.

He also had a strong presence on television, especially in historical and fantasy genres. He played Titus Pullo, a Roman soldier and adventurer, in the acclaimed HBO series Rome (2005-2007). In the Starz series Black Sails (2014-2017), he portrayed Blackbeard, the notorious pirate captain. He was Othere, a mysterious wanderer, in the History Channel series Vikings (2019-2020). He also lent his voice to Star Wars Rebels (2016-2018) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2020), as Gar Saxon, a Mandalorian warrior.

His most recent role was Scott Buxton, the British governor and antagonist of RRR (2023), a Telugu-language epic directed by SS Rajamouli. The film is set in pre-independence India and follows two freedom fighters who rebel against the British Raj. Critics and audiences alike praised Stevenson's performance for his menacing portrayal of colonial oppression.

Stevenson was also working on another project at his death: Cassino in Ischia, a film directed by Paolo Genovese set during World War II. He was also cast as Baylan Skoll, the main villain of Ahsoka (2023), a Star Wars live-action series starring Rosario Dawson as the former Jedi Padawan.

Stevenson's death has shocked and saddened many fans and colleagues who admired his work and personality. SS Rajamouli, the director of RRR, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, saying: "Shocking... Just can't believe this news. Ray brought so much energy and vibrancy to the RRR sets. He was an amazing person to work with. My deepest actor Ray Stevenson dies at 58
